Preventive Care in Longmont, CO

Routine preventive care is really the backbone of any dental treatment. Without regular preventive examinations and cleanings, we can only react and treat problems as they occur. In the long run, this approach would be uncomfortable and more expensive for you.

With preventive treatments and examinations, we have the opportunity to not only stop problems like decay and gum disease before they can ever get started, but we can also spot a developing problem in its earliest stages. This is the point where simple, conservative treatment is likely to be the most effective, which is great news for you.

For our adult patients, we recommend a cleaning and exam every six months and routine x-rays at least yearly in order to catch tooth decay early on and avoid costlier, possibly painful problems down the road. Our hygienists are gentle and considerate to your specific dental needs, and our new x-ray technology saves you time and reduces radiation exposure, with the added benefit of being more comfortable than traditional x-ray films.

Why Do I Need a Cleaning?

One of the most common questions our patients ask us is why they need to have their teeth cleaned professionally when they brush and floss as recommended. There’s actually a simple answer – a trained hygienist working with specialized instruments and taking the time and attention necessary can remove far more plaque than you could ever remove by brushing and flossing.

No matter how diligent you are in your homecare routine, you’re going to miss some plaque here and there. The spaces in between your teeth and just beneath the gumline are particularly susceptible. When this plaque is missed, it hardens into tartar, and once that happens, it can only be removed by a hygienist. If it’s not removed, then the stage is set for decay and gum disease.

Preventive Care Examinations

During your examination, Dr. Bond will carefully check each of your teeth as well as your soft tissues for any developing problems and signs of disease. Along with looking for issues like cavities and gum disease, Dr. Bond will also be assessing the alignment of your bite and scanning for any signs of oral cancer.

He’ll also ask questions to identify signs of conditions like bruxism (clenching and grinding) and temporomandibular joint disorder, two problems that can do considerable damage to your teeth. You and Dr. Bond can discuss any questions or concerns that you might have about your dental health so that these can be addressed.

If Dr. Bond does spot any developing issues, he will bring these to your attention and discuss your treatment options as well as the likely outcome of each so that you can make an educated and informed decision about your dental care.
